March of the Albion continues: Brighton 3-0 Liverpool photos
When you look through these wonderful photos from Brighton 3-0 Liverpool, remember that Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were chasing a quadruple as recently as May.
They won the League Cup and the FA Cup, reached the Champions League final and pushed Manchester City all the way in the Premier League title race.
And here they were being totally outplayed and comprehensively hammered at the hands of the Albion. A 3-0 win to Brighton could quite feasibly have been four or five.
Admittedly, Liverpool have not been the force they were last season in the current campaign. But that should not detract from a brilliant Seagulls display in which the Redmen were made to look like relegation candidates.
The Amex was in party mood even before kick off. Alexis Mac Allister made his first home appearance since winning the World Cup with Argentina.
He was treated to a heroes reception of applause, flags and a giant Argentina shirt being passed across the North Stand when introduced to the crowd before kick off wearing his medal from Qatar.
Brighton were without their hat-trick hero from the 3-3 draw at Anfield in October. Leandro Trossard and his agent had thrown a wobbly about the Albion not yet facilitating a sale and his recent dropping from the first team for a lack of effort.
The Albion’s top scorer subsequently fled to the continent on Friday afternoon via the Eurotunnel. Not that his absence or the soap opera surrounding it made any difference to Roberto De Zerbi and his players.
Brighton should have led going into half time following an opening 45 minutes in which Liverpool could barely muster a shot on target.
It did not take long after the break for the Albion to make their dominance count. Just 70 seconds had elapsed when Solly March tapped home a Kaoru Mitoma cross.
Less than 10 minutes later and March added his and Brighton’s second with a stunning left footed effort bent into the far corner of Alisson’s goal.
Having scored three times in three years under Glow Up Graham Potter, March now has four in five appearances since Boxing Day.
Substitute Danny Welbeck rounded things off with a goal evoking memories of Paul Gascoigne against Scotland at Euro 96, flicking the ball over the head of a defender and crashing home a volley.
The performance and result left many Brighton fans heralding it is the greatest day in Albion history. Such a title seems to get bandied around once a month at present and with total justification.
What a time to be a Brighton supporter.
