Anfield stunned by Albion comeback: Liverpool 2-2 Brighton photos

What happened to the famous Anfield atmosphere? These photos from Liverpool 2-2 Brighton unfortunately do not indicate how shocked silence and the sound of anguish and frustration gripped over 50,000 Redmen as the Albion completed a famous comeback on Merseyside.

Things had started so well for the hosts, too. Jordan Henderson had Liverpool 1-0 ahead inside of four minute. 20 minutes later and Sadio Mane doubled the advantage.

Fresh off the back of their 5-0 win away at arch rivals Manchester United six days earlier, it looked like the rampant Reds were going to rack up another big scoreline in their pursuit of Manchester City’s Premier League title.

Brighton though had other ideas. After surviving a scare when Mane had another goal ruled out for handball after Robert Sanchez got in a right mess with a Lewis Dunk back pass, it was the Albion who dominated from the 30 minute mark onwards.

Enock Mwepu levelled things up with a stunning effort from 30 yards which caught Alisson completely unawares just before the break. A beautiful passing move then put Leandro Trossard in on goal early in the second half and the Vampire of Genk made no mistake, firing home to level the game.

Brighton might have even won it, Trossard again managing to get clear and beat Alisson only for the linesman’s flag to correctly go up for a tight offside decision.

The Albion were a hair’s breadth away from another famous victory at Anfield to go with last season’s 1-0 success – not bad form at a venue where as recently as 2012 Brighton had been completely outclassed when losing 6-1 in the FA Cup whilst a Championship outfit. We have come a long way.
