Big shock at the Bridge: Chelsea 1-0 Brighton photos
Everyone loves a cup upset. These photos capture the night when Chelsea pulled off an almighty shock by eliminating Brighton from the Carabao Cup at the third round stage via a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
The Albion arrived in West London sitting third in the Premier League, some 10 points and 11 places above their hosts. The world watched on, wondering if Chelsea would be able to shock one of the Top Six?
That they managed to was largely because of three key moments in the first half. Joao Pedro and Ansu Fati missed easy chances for the Albion and Lesley Ugochukwu somehow escaped a read card when he should clearly have received a second booking for a terrible foul on Carlos Baleba.
Had Brighton gone into the break 2-0 ahead and the Blues been down to 10 men, it would have been a very different outcome.
The likelihood being the Albion securing their third victory in a row over Chelsea after April’s 2-1 win at the Bridge and the 4-1 humiliation heaped on Glow Up Graham last October.
Instead, Nicolas Jackson scored the only goal of the game early in the second half. Not only did that prove to be the winner, but it also won Chelsea’s September Goal of the Month Award… on account of it being the only one they managed all month.
The full time whistle was greeted by delirium both inside Stamford Bridge and by all those loyal Chelsea fans from Lagos to Bloemfontein.
It was almost as if they had just won the Carabao Cup itself, rather than scraping past in the third round against a Brighton side with eyes on bigger prizes this season.
Bless ’em.
