Goals galore on April Fool’s Day: Brighton 3-3 Brentford photos

April Fool’s Day brought Brentford to the Amex and as these photos show, the 3-3 draw which played out between the Bees and Brighton had everything.

Six goals for starters. A last minute penalty awarded by VAR and converted by Alexis Mac Allister to level the tie for the Albion.

There was an indirect free kick inside the box after Jason Steele picked up a back pass. Steele also played one of the passes of the season with a 80 yard ball over the top to tee up Kaoru Mitoma for Brighton’s first goal.

Several examples of horrific defending from both teams added to the entertainment, as did the Seagulls taking 33 shots – the most any side has managed in a Premier League game so far in the 2022-23 campaign.

Brentford led not once, not twice, but thrice. Pontus Jansson put the visitors ahead with only 10 minutes played with a bullet header from a cross after being left completely unmarked in the box.

Steele turning into prime David Beckham and sending Mitoma scampering clear took place 11 minutes later. Parity lasted less than 90 seconds, a poor Joel Veltman throw combined with some questionable work from Lewis Dunk leaving Ivan Toney to rifle past Steele.

Brighton were level again within six minutes. Solly March crossed to the back post when Danny Welbeck produced an almighty leap and header past David Raya.

Any hopes that the second half might be a bit calmer were ruined when the Bees went 3-2 ahead four minutes after the restart. Levi Colwill and Pervis Estupinan lost Ethan Pinnock and with Steele rooted to his line, the visiting defender volleyed home.

The Albion laid siege to the Brentford goal over the next 40 minutes but they could find no way past Raya. It looked like being another one of those frustrating home experiences, akin to the 1-0 defeat to Fulham last month which Brighton in no way deserved to lose.

But then Deniz Undav hit a shot which the hand of Aaron Hickey deflected over the bar. Referee Michael Oliver was told to watch the incident back on the pitch side monitor and pointed to the spot with Mac Allister doing the rest. Mad.
