The perfect Valentine’s Day: Brighton 3-0 Chelsea photos

Carlsberg don’t do Valentine’s Day. But if they did, it would probably look a lot like these photos from Brighton 3-0 Chelsea.

For the second time in the space of six days, the Albion and the billion pound bottle jobs met at the Amex. And for the second time in the space of six days, it was Brighton who came out victorious.

Round two was a much more convincing win than the previous weekend’s 2-1 FA Cup victory. Which came as something of a surprise given Chelsea were back at full strength and most assumed they would be fired up for revenge.

The Albion though made them look ordinary. The stats showed the Blues managed just one shot on target all night. It did not even come from a Chelsea player, Adam Webster being denied a fine own goal by Bart Verbruggen.

A lack of attacking potency was matched by frustration amongst the Blues ex-Brighton contingent. Moises Caicedo was booked. Marc Cucurella ripped apart by Yankubu Minteh. And Robert Sanchez forced to watch on from the bench after hilariously losing his place as Chelsea number to Filip Jorgensen.

The new man was beaten for the first time on the night by a stunning Kaoru Mitoma goal. Verbruggen sent a long ball forward, brought down by Mitoma with a first touch described by Jamie Carraghaer on commentary as being Lionel Messi-esque.

Mitoma stepped inside Trevor Chalobah and unleashed an early rocket which caught Jorgensen completely by surprise. Super control and a super finish from a super player.

Minteh doubled the advantage shortly after when teed up by Danny Welbeck. Cucurella was again left in such a daze that he ended up on the floor; just as he had for the two Albion goals six days previously.

The same thing happened again when Brighton made it three midway through the second half. Welbeck robbed Levi Colwill of possession. Minteh stormed past Cucurella and finished from what initially looked an impossibly tight angle.

Happy Valentine’s Day.
