It was a memorable night for Brighton fans as the Albion beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Amex in the FA Cup – but an evening to forget for Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez and Moises Caicedo, as our fan photos show.
Cucurella got snapped in half by Joel Veltman, who picked up a booking for his troubles. Sanchez ended up in a right mess for the first Brighton goal from Georginio Rutter.
All three were then involved in the Brighton winner, gloriously ending up on their arses as Kaoru Mitoma volleyed the Albion into round five of the world’s greatest cup competition.
What made Brighton eliminating a squad of players costing over a billion pounds to put together particularly impressive was it coming off the back of last weekend’s catastrophe at the City Ground.
The Albion were thrashed 7-0 by Nottingham Forest for their heaviest league defeat since 1958. Typical Brighton to bounce back by defeating the side currently fourth in the Premier League just seven days later.
Not that things got off to the best start against the Blues. Bart Verbruggen gifted Chelsea a fifth minute lead when turning a Cole Palmer cross into the back of the net for a pretty funny own goal.
I would hazard a guess quite a few people at that point where thinking here we go again. But Brighton responded impressively, levelling just seven minutes later.
Sanchez came for a Tariq Lamptey cross but got nowhere near it. Chelsea half-cleared to Veltman, whose aerial ball back into the box was met by a towering Rutter headed beyond the stranded Sanchez.
The winner came around the hour mark. Lamptey perhaps got a little lucky when the ball rebounded off his arm in the build up. No VAR until the fifth round of the FA Cup meant no officials noticed.
Rutter subsequently lofted a pass over the appealing Chelsea back line. Mitoma brought it down on his chest and beat Sanchez to ensure Brighton beat wannabe Brighton… much to the embarrassment of Blues fans from West London to Lagos.
