There is something very striking about the poll for our WeAreBrighton.com October Player of the Month – namely, that the five candidates consist of four defenders and one goalkeeper.
It’s hard to include anyone who has occupied an attacking role in October, given that Brighton and Hove Albion managed to score a paltry two goals from their five games in 1-1 draws at home to Ipswich Town and away at Blackpool.
For the second year running, the Albion failed to win a game in the tenth month of the year with the other results seeing a 0-0 draw at Derby County, a 1-0 reversal at home to Middlesbrough and a 1-0 loss away at Leicester City.
That meant that we slipped from first place in the Championship table at the start of the month to 10th by the end of it. And those two points we did manage to collect were largely earned by the heroics of a certain individual between the posts for Gus Poyet’s side.
Wayne Bridge
The former England left back had another excellent month, going so far as to state that he was loving his football again despite playing in what has this month proven to be a thoroughly boring Brighton team. He remains as dangerous going forward as he is steady at the back.
Bruno
Missed the months opening match with Ipswich through injury but quite rightly the former Valencia man was returned straight to the starting line up as soon as he was fit again. He may be just three months into his Albion career, but already a massive fan favourite.
Adam El-Abd
The defender had another run out for Egypt and his form is the reason that the highly rated Lewis Dunk is still to start a league game, having not been seen since the Capital One Cup defeat to Swindon Town in August. He put in a colossal performance in the draw with Blackpool and hasn’t put a foot wrong all season.
Gordon Greer
One black mark against his name as he was responsible for the deflection that wrong-footed Tomasz Kuszczak for what turned out to be Middlesbrough’s winner, but other than that he has been in fine form at centre back alongside El-Abd.

Words really can’t do justice to how good he has been in October, single-handedly helping the Seagulls secure their only two points of the month with an inspired final ten minutes at Pride Park and a simply world class performance away at Blackpool.
