Leandro Trossard voted WAB October 2022 Brighton Player of the Month

Eight goals were scored in the first six games of the Roberto De Zerbi Era. Having contributed five of them, it is no surprise to see Leandro Trossard as a clear and easy winner of the WAB October 2022 Brighton Player of the Month award.

Trossard began October by writing his name into the history books, joining a very exclusive club of Albion players to have scored a top flight hat-trick alongside Peter Ward and Gordon Smith.

His treble at Anfield secured a famous 3-3 draw against Liverpool in a chaotic first game under De Zerbi. Brighton failed to find a way past any of Spurs, Brentford or Nottingham Forest before Trossard struck again in an impressive team display at champions Manchester City.

The Albion may have lost 3-1 that day at the Etihad Stadium, but the result did not tell the whole story. City benefited from two contentious VAR decisions to go into half time 2-0 ahead.

Once Trossard pulled one back with a powerful effort catching Ederson out at his near post, Pep Guardiola’s side looked more than a little worried. They needed a world class goal from 30 yards from Kevin De Bruyne to wrap up the three points.

Somebody was going to be on the end of an Albion backlash from that unjust result. That it was Graham Potter and Chelsea was delightful, the former Brighton head coach being humiliated in losing 4-1 on his return to the Amex.

Trossard got the party started, dancing around a couple of Blues defenders in the box before firing past Kepa Arrizabalaga from a tight angle.

The quality of the finish should add £10m million onto Trossard’s asking price for when Chelsea inevitably come calling in January for the Albion’s top scorer.

De Zerbi will be eager to hang onto Trossard, having spoken about the Vampire of Genk in glowing terms following his appointment as Seagulls boss.

The other player who De Zerbi was hottest on was Solly March. De Zerbi should feel very satisfied if he is reading this (Ciao Roberto!) that March was voted into second behind Leandro Trossard in the October 2022 Player of the Month vote.

March claimed a fine assist for Trossard’s goal at City. It was in the Chelsea game where he really shone however, giving Marc Cucurella such a torrid time that the wild-haired former Albion favourite was withdrawn by Potter midway through the second half.

The comparisons between Cucurella’s experience at the hands of March and Dan Harding trying to deal with Will Buckly were gleefully noted by Albion fans everywhere.

Moises Caicedo is another player who might become a part of Chelsea’s asset stripping of Brighton. He finished third in the October 20202 Player of the Month poll, an acknowledgement that he has become so crucial as his personal performances to have a huge bearing on the outcome of matches.

His best games of October came against Liverpool, City and Chelsea, games where he anchored the midfield like a bloke who has been playing at Premier League level for six years rather than six months.
