Solly March voted WAB February 2022 Brighton Player of the Month

Want to know how bad February was for the Albion? Despite only featuring in 125 minutes of Premier League action across four matches, Solly March was voted as our WAB February 2022 Brighton Player of the Month with well over 50 percent of the vote.

The left wing back was an unused substitute in the 2-0 win at Watford and the 2-0 defeat at Manchester United. Graham Potter gave him 35 minutes from the bench in the crushing 3-0 defeat at home to Burnley, in which time he did enough to top the WAB Player Ratings against the Clarets.

That earned March a start in the final game of the month when Aston Villa came to the Amex. He was the Albion’s most dangerous attacking player in another disappointing defeat as Steven Gerrard’s side left with all three points from a 2-0 victory.

What March has done in February 2022 is remind Brighton fans and Graham Potter of his quality. The outstanding form of Marc Cucurella at left wing back since the Spaniard with the wild hair arrived from Getafe in the summer has meant that March has spent much of this season out of the starting XI.

Despite this, he remains the ultimate professional who never complains. He never develops an attitude over his lack of game time and does a job whenever and wherever he is asked to play by Potter.

March deserves to be playing more football. Brighton’s problem is how do you get him in the team without blunting the attacking threat Cucurella poses from left wing back?

Play both down that channel and Cucurella is doing a job as an orthodox full back. March has never been as effective down the right, and in any case would you willingly drop Tariq Lamptey?

One for Potter to find an answer to. Or perhaps he is content with using March as a super sub, knowing that even in so few minutes he can deliver enough quality to win a Player of the Month award for Brighton in admittedly poor February?

Second place behind March went to Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentine playmaker deserved a bigger share of the vote in our January Player of the Month when he finished third behind Dan Burn and Cucurella.

He has at least stepped up to the runner up position in February, remaining an industrious presence who continued to try and make things happen even as the Albion’s form deserted them.

Brighton only scored two Premier League goals all month, both of which came in the win over Watford. Mac Allister claimed an assist for the second of those with a dangerous corner eventually bundled home by Adam Webster.

Prior to Mac Allister’s 64th minute introduction from the bench at Vicarage Road, the Hornets had been enjoying their best spell of the game.

He and fellow substitute Yves Bissouma helped turn the tide back in the Albion’s favour to secure a three points which look particularly valuable given what has happened since that sunny day in Hertfordshire.

The identity of the man who was voted in third provides further indication of the trials and tribulations Brighton suffered in February.

Robert Sanchez made a string of good saves in the defeat against Manchester United to keep Brighton in the game in-between Cristiano Ronaldo opening the scoring and Bruno Fernandes adding the hosts’ second right at the death.

Without those, the Albion would have suffered a heavy loss at Old Trafford. It was a similar story when Villa came to the Amex, several solid stops and one unreal one handed tip around the post from a Philippe Coutinho free kick in another game which would have otherwise ended in a far worse score line.
