Time flies when you’re having fun. It does not feel like 20 years ago that Martin Hinshelwood was surprisingly appointed as Brighton boss ahead of the club’s first season in the second tier of English football for a decade.

From the Albion manager job becoming vacant at the completion of the 2001-02 campaign, it took Dick Knight 11 weeks to decide he wanted to promote Director of Youth Hinshelwood into the role.

That meant the search took nearly as long as Hinshelwood managed to last in the job. Within 12 weeks, the new man was relieved of his duties to be replaced by a new new man, Steve Coppell.
