Two wins and a defeat represented a promising second month in the Premier League for Brighton and Hove Albion as we ended September in the dizzy heights of 14th spot in the division.

After all the hullabaloo surrounding the clubs failure to sign a striker in the transfer window, Pascal Gross went some of the way to alleviating fears about where the goals would come from as he scored twice in the 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion. He also set up Tomer Hemed for the third.

The assists didn’t stop there for Gross as he provided the cross for Solly March’s header in the 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth and then set up Hemed for the only goal of the game as Newcastle United were beaten 1-0 before Hemed blotted his copybook somewhat by getting banned retrospectively for three games for a stamp.

Two players who’s form didn’t go unnoticed were Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk, both of whom received rave reviews during the months televised games with Bouremouth and Newcastle, with Jamie Carragher talking up Dunk’s chances of an England call up just a few months into his top flight career.

THE CONTENDERS
Shane Duffy
He may have been overshadowed by his centre back partner Lewis Dunk, but that doesn’t mean the Irish defenders contribution should go unnoticed. He has headed and blocked anything that has come his way with the only blip being a funny five minutes at Bournemouth.

Lewis Dunk
Won the award for August and has a real case to do so again this month. The Albion vice-captain dealt well with Bournemouth’s dangerous front line at the Vitality Stadium and played a huge part in the clean sheet that helped defeat Newcastle United.

Pascal Gross
He is already making the £3m paid to Ingolstadt look a bargain, being involved in all five goals scored in September – netting two himself against West Bromwich Albion, crossing for Solly March’s header at Bournemouth and sending in the free kick which led to the winner against Newcastle.

Tomer Hemed
The Israeli would probably have been sold had we signed a new striker in the window. Instead, he found himself scoring in back-to-back home games as well as putting in a man of the match showing at home to Newcastle as the lone striker.

Solly March
Scored at Bournemouth and has been a constant headache to opposition full backs in September. His performance in that game at the Vitality Stadium earned him the highest praise possible for an Arsenal fan and a winger who loves to cut in from the left after Thierry Henry raved about him in Sky Sports’ post-game analysis.
