Arsenal outgunned in League Cup: Arsenal 1-3 Brighton photos
Another trip to the Emirates Stadium, another set of photos of the Seagulls triumphing in North London – this time in the League Cup via a final score of Arsenal 1-3 Brighton.
The Albion have now won three and drawn one of their six visits to the home of the Gunners. This latest success saw Roberto De Zerbi’s side knock the Premier League leaders out of the apparent much-maligned competition, giving their own hopes of winning it a serious boost.
We say apparent much-maligned, because Brighton supporters have little inclination to agree with the assessment that the League Cup is in demise.
Over 6,500 Seagulls flocked to the capital on a Wednesday night to cheer their side into the fourth round. With Arsenal and Chelsea both already out, Manchester City and Liverpool drawn to face each other next and one of Newcastle United and Plucky Little Bournemouth also set to depart, the draw is opening up nicely for an unfashionable winner.
If Brighton were to reach Wembley for the first time since the 2019 FA Cup semi final, then the current dalliance Albion fans are enjoying with the competition would become a full-blown love affair.
And why not? Under De Zerbi, the Seagulls look capable of beating anyone on their day. They had to come from behind to win at Arsenal, trailing for seven first half minutes after Eddie Nketiah beat Jason Steele to put the hosts 1-0 ahead.
Danny Welbeck earned and then converted a penalty against his former club to level the tie. Brighton had to weather something of a storm at the start of the second half, needing two impressive saves from Steel to remain on equal terms.
Substitute Kaoru Mitoma put the Albion ahead on 57 minutes with the victory rounded off by the electric Tariq Lamptey 13 minutes later, completing another unforgettable experience at the Emirates.
