Bloom-ing good day out: Photos from Brentford 0-1 Brighton
Here is a question for you – how many other fans of Premier League clubs get to take photos of their owner watching a game with them from the away stand, as Albion supporters could at Brentford 0-1 Brighton?
Not many is the answer. Tony Bloom joined 1,699 Seagulls fans in their corner of the Brentford Community Stadium and went madder than anyone when Leandro Trossard scored a 90th minute winner to give Brighton a rare league success away against the Bees.
On only one previous occasion this century had the Albion won at Brentford – and that needed an own goal to give Gus Poyet He Who Must Not Be Named’s 2010-11 League One title winners their third win of eight during Mad March.
Bloom’s presence amongst the travelling faithful was because of his longstanding rivalry with Brentford owner Matthew Benham. Benham once worked for Bloom before going it alone and setting up his own company, causing a serious fallout.
So serious is the hatred between the two that Uncle Tony shuns the directors’ box whenever the Albion go to Brentford as he cannot even stand to be in the vicinity of his former protegee.
You can only imagine then how satisfying this win was for Bloom. Brighton were admittedly lucky to secure it as the Bees were much the better side for the first 70 minutes in which they played at a frenetic pace until running out of steam.
Brentford then paid for failing to take their chances and the naivety of not pacing themselves to last the full 90. The Albion finished the stronger, capped off by Trossard producing a moment of quality to secure all three points and leave Brighton sixth in the Premier League table.
