Champions & VAR see off the Albion: Man City 3-1 Brighton photos
These photos from Man City 3-1 Brighton show the Albion defeated by the champions at the Etihad Stadium. The final score did not tell the story of how well Roberto De Zerbi’s side played, however.
For 30 minutes of the second half, the Seagulls dominated against opponents who normally run rings around every side they face – including Brighton.
The Albion have never won a Premier League game at the Etihad. Last season’s visit ended in a 3-0 defeat in which City did not need to get out of second gear.
It was nowhere near as straightforward this time around. At 2-1, Brighton had City worried. Having pulled one back, Leandro Trossard was denied by a brilliant block from Ederson.
If that had gone in, things might have been very different. Instead, City went up the other end where a piece of Kevin De Bruyne magic made it 3-1 rather than 2-2.
A sucker punch to end the Albion’s hopes of a comeback; and a reminder of the quality that the big clubs possess (and can afford) in comparison to the likes of Brighton.
The big clubs also tend to get decisions go their way and that was very much the case in Man City 3-1 Brighton.
Erling Haaland’s first goal could have been ruled out for a shove on Adam Webster. Their second saw Bernardo Silva dangle a leg towards Lewis Dunk, initiating contact in the box and then going down like he had been shot by a sniper.
Craig Pawson waved play on and the action continued for what felt like 25 minutes. A combination of Mr Pawson and VAR then decided that Silva had been fouled, giving Haaland the chance to tuck away the penalty.
To stand a chance of getting a result away against City, you cannot be up against 11 of their top talents plus the referee. Brighton deserved more.
Hopefully, they get it – and earn De Zerbi his first win as Albion boss – when Chelsea and Glow Up Graham Potter visit the Amex next.
