Fab four in Liverpool: Everton 1-4 Brighton photos

The Albion rather like kick starting a new calendar year by making history at Goodison Park with these photos from Everton 1-4 Brighton capturing the first time the Seagulls have ever scored four goals in a top flight away game.

Not a bad way to begin 2023. 2022 of course had started with the Albion winning at Goodison for the first time in their 121 year existence, a final score of Everton 2-3 Brighton delivered thanks to a brace from Alexis Mac Allister.

11 months later and Mac Allister would be a World Cup winner with Argentina. The midfielder made his return to the Seagulls squad against the Toffees but had to settle for a place amongst the substitutes, Roberto De Zerbi opting to ease him back in gently after his exploits in Qatar and subsequent well-deserved two weeks on the piss celebrating.

That was not the only selection decision De Zerbi had to make. He handed 18-year-old Evan Ferguson a full Premier League debut in place of Chelsea transfer target Leandro Trossard and brought Jeremy Sarmiento into the XI in place of Adam Lallana.

It was a bold selection from the Brighton head coach but one which paid off handsomely. Kaoru Mitoma gave the Seagulls a first half lead before they ran rampant after the interval, raining in three goals in the space of eight minutes to move 4-0 ahead inside of an hour.

Sarmiento and Ferguson justified their spots by linking up for Ferguson to double the lead. Ferguson then teed up Solly March for the third, followed by Pascal Gross outpacing (yes, really) the Everton defence on a 40 yard charge towards goal ended with a dinked finish over Jordan Pickford.

The only blot on the Albion’s copybook came when Robert Sanchez conceded a needless penalty right at the death.

Demari Gray converted and Brighton’s clean sheet was gone – not that there were many Everton fans left by that point. And those who were greeted the final whistle with a crescendo of boos and chants of “Sack the board”.

Glorious.
