History made at Old Trafford: Photos from Man United 1-2 Brighton
Graham Potter is getting rather good at becoming the first Albion manager to do things. Thanks to his tactical nous on the opening day of the 2022-23 season resulting in a scoreboard reading Man United 1-2 Brighton, we have a set of photos depicting the Seagulls’ first ever win at Old Trafford.
Needless to say, that scoreboard at full time featured in a lot of pictures. As did those magnificent scenes at the end, where Potter and his players soaked up the adulation of a joyous away end.
United fans meanwhile slunk away, the Theatre of Dreams having turned into an auditorium of nightmares they could not wait to escape.
In the case of one fan, that escape was to sit on a street corner with head in hands draped in a half-and-a-half scarf.
@LaurenLaing94 on Twitter captured the moment beautifully from a car window and now has the bookie’s hot favourite for picture of the season with 37 games of the Premier League season still remaining.
How much more history might Potter write in that time? He already has led the Albion to their highest ever finish in English football and a first victory away at Everton, Aston Villa, Preston North End and now United. Europe, perhaps?
Brighton fans were singing tongue in cheek about going on a European Tour. But why not? If Danny Welbeck stays fit, Pascal Gross keeps scoring, Moises Caicedo does not burn out and Leandro Trossard remains a revelation at left wing back, anything seems possible.
Potter too showed why he is considered one of the best English managers in the world There were no players out of position or bizarre substitutions.
He identified his side’s strengths and United’s weaknesses, surprising Erirk Ten Hag by having Brighton play more direct. The result was two Gross goals in 10 first half minutes to stun the Stretford End.
The hosts pulled one back midway through the second half via an Alexis Mac Allister own goal, but it proved to be a mere consolation. For the first time in 121 years, the Albion had won away at Manchester United.
