Super Sunday in Steel City: Sheffield United 0-5 Brighton photos
It was a Super Sunday for the Seagulls in the Steel City as these photos from Sheffield United 0-5 Brighton show the Albion racking up their biggest ever top flight away victory.
Brighton were in the sort of mood whereby the relegation threatened Blades would have struggled to live with them had the full 90 minutes been played as 11 versus 11.
When Mason Holgate saw straight red for attempted murder on Kaoru Mitoma inside a quarter of an hour, it enabled the Albion to run riot.
Facundo Buonanotte opened the scoring when turning home a Lewis Dunk downwards header from close range following a Pascal Gross corner.
Danny Welbeck doubled the advantage, lashing home a volley after Sheffield United goalkeeper Wes Foderingham pulled off a smart save from Mitoma.
Mitoma created goal three which arrived in the second half. The Japanese Bullet Train delivered a low cross diverted beyond Foderingham by the outstretched leg of Jack Robinson for a splendid own goal.
The final 15 minutes then became the Simon Adingra show. Fresh from winning AFCON with Ivory Coast, Adingra scored twice late on to complete the hammering.
Gross set up the first, moving him onto nine assists for the campaign and breaking his own Brighton record for most in a top flight season. With three months still to play, the mind boggles at how many assists he will end 2023-24 with.
Substitute Ansu Fati teed up Adingra’s second and the Albion’s fifth, despite getting crunched in the build up. Sheffield United had by this point given up playing any sort of football and instead resorting to kicking the Albion to the ground.
After beating the Blades 5-2 in the FA Cup three weeks ago, Brighton have scored 10 goals at Bramall Lane in the space of 22 days. Sheffield United have managed 12 at home in the Premier League all season.
The Championship beckons – and is where supporters who booed Mitoma for nearly having his career ended deserve to be. Off you pop, Blades.
