A cold Tuesday night in Stoke: Photos from Stoke 0-1 Brighton

Who says the Magic of the FA Cup is dead? Over 2,000 Albion fans trekked to the Bet365 Stadium where a scoreline of Stoke 0-1 Brighton proved the Seagulls can do it on a cold Tuesday night in the Potteries – and those who did go clearly enjoyed themselves if the number of photos sent into us are anything to go by.

This should not really come as a surprise; Brighton supporters have a fine relationship with the world’s greatest cup competition, helped by putting excellent wins in the bag already this season away at Middlesbrough and at home to Liverpool.

A third FA Cup victory of 2022-23 moved the Albion into the quarter finals for the just the fifth time in 122 years. It was not pretty and entertainment was in scant supply but all that mattered was Brighton’s ball being in the hat for the next round.

Evan Ferguson scored the only goal on the half hour mark when slotting home a selfless square pass from Kaoru Mitoma.

Lewis Dunk had been heavily involved in the build up on his 400th Albion appearance. It was the Brighton captain who released Mitoma with a superb through ball played out of defence which cut through the Potters backline.

Stoke had a couple of decent opportunities in the first half which Jason Steele proved equal to. The Albion then passed up several chances late on to make the game safe, Deniz Undav lobbing wide when presented with an open goal and Danny Welbeck hitting the post.

Moises Caicedo was outstanding in midfield despite being on the end of some pretty rough treatment from the hosts.

Brighton’s reward for overcoming Stoke is a home tie with Grimsby Town – currently 16th in League Two – with the winners of that match at the Amex progressing to a Wembley semi final.

We probably all know what happens next…
