Mac avenges Wembley heartbreak: Brighton 1-0 Man Utd photos

11 days ago, we were posting images of Albion heartbreak at the hands of Manchester United. The irony that this latest set of photos from a Brighton against Man Utd fixture shows the Seagulls winning 1-0 via a last minute penalty cannot be lost on anyone.

95 minutes of entertaining football had elapsed with nothing separating the sides. Jason Steele and David De Gea had both pulled off a series of superb saves to leave the game heading for a 0-0 draw, just as at Wembley in the FA Cup semi final.

But then Luke Shaw inexplicably put his arm in the air and handled a Solly March corner. For once, VAR worked in favour of Brighton and after what felt like a lifetime, referee Andre Mariner completed his review of the incident on the pitch side monitor and pointed to the spot.

Whilst the Amex held its breath, Alexis Mac Allister remained the coolest man on the planet. He composed himself, stepped up and fired the ball into the top corner to give De Gea no chance.

A cathartic roar was let out, so loud you could hear it in homes a couple of miles away from Falmer. United barely had time to restart the game before Mr Mariner blew the final whistle and Brighton had another precious three points in their quest for Europe.

There have been some fantastic evenings in the 12 seasons the Amex has been open. Beating Manchester United via a penalty in the final seconds and the release of emotion which came with it has to be up there with the best.

It extended the Albion’s superb record at home against United in the Premier League to four wins from six matches. The Red Devils’ two victories came behind closed doors, meaning the self-proclaimed biggest club in the world have never taken so much as a point from the Amex with supporters present.
