Champions cannot beat the Albion: Brighton 1-1 Man City photos

The final home game of a record-breaking 2022-23 season resulted in one last set of brilliant photos as Brighton held Man City to a 1-1 draw at the Amex.

Taking a point off the champions was enough to confirm the Albion finish in sixth spot and will play Europa League football next season.

City arrived in Sussex having won their previous 12 Premier League games in a row. One of the best sides to ever play the game and chasing an historic treble the Citizens may be, but they were given something of a footballing lesson by Brighton.

That resulted in further praise from Pep Guardiola, who in the build up to the game compared Roberto De Zerbi to a Michelin star chef for the way the Albion are influencing football.

It was all a far cry from when City last failed to beat the Albion, causing Guardiola to throw a hissy fit at full time of Brighton 3-2 Man City two years ago.

Phil Foden scored for the Citizens on that occasion and he was at it again, plundering his traditional goal past Brighton to put the champions ahead midway through the first half.

The Albion equaliser came via yet another Goal of the Season contender from Julio Enciso. The teenager from Paraguay picked his spot from 30 yards out, hitting a quite incredible strike into the very top corner.

Watch the highlights back and the camera angle from behind Enciso shows City fans applauding, putting their hands on their head and with mouths open wide, agog at what they had just witnessed.

Both sides went searching for further goals but none were forthcoming. The full time whistle brought confirmation of Brighton’s highest ever finish and another lap of celebration from the players, on what might well have been a farewell home appearance for the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo and Joel Veltman.
