Did that really happen? Apparently so: Brighton 4-0 Man United photos
Brighton 4-0 Man United was an evening of football so surreal that the only way it seems believable is through the cold, hard evidence of lots and lots of photos.
Thankfully, that is exactly what we got from one of the most extraordinary 90 minutes in the Albion’s 121 year existence.
The mighty Manchester United were reduced to a quivering wreck as Brighton scored four unanswered goals in less than one hour on their way to a famous victory.
Moises Caicedo opened the scoring with his first Premier League goal on 15 minutes, driving a crisp effort from 25 yards into the bottom corner of David De Gea’s goal.
It was in the second half that the floodgates opened. Marc Cucurella made it 2-0 four minutes after the restart, bursting into tears with emotion as he celebrated in front of a North Stand that was already losing its mind at what was happening.
The was more to come. Nifty footwork and a cool finish from Pascal Gross made it 3-0 with Leandro Trossard bundling home the fourth after United were unable to effectively clear Danny Welbeck’s lobbed effort over De Gea.
That might have been the end of the scoring, but it was not the end of the entertainment. “WE WANT FIVE” shouted the Amex crowd, mocking United as Cristiano Ronaldo looked bewildered at what was happening around him.
United fans had smuggled a flare into the Amex with the obvious intention of letting it off when they scored. Instead, they had to settle for lighting and throwing it onto the pitch to celebrate Harry Maguire making his return from three games out injured.
Yes, Brighton were that good that Ralf Rangnick felt the need to bring on an extra defender with his side trailing by four as a damage limitation move.
It was absolutely glorious to watch. There have been some magnificent experiences in the decade that the Amex has been open.
Securing promotion to the Premier League against Wigan Athletic. The St Patrick’s Day Massacre of Crystal Palace and winning with 10 men versus the same opponents. Beating United 1-0 in May 2018 to ensure top flight survival under Chris Hughton.
None of those though can top Brighton 4-0 Manchester United. A special evening in what looks certain to now be a record-breaking season.
What a time to be an Albion fan.
