Dream result at Old Trafford: Man United 1-3 Brighton photos

Man United 1-3 Brighton represents the fourth Premier League meeting in a row from which Albion fans have photos of a famous win over the Red Devils.

The run started when Brighton hammered United 4-0 at the Amex in May 2022. Then came a first ever win at Old Trafford three months later delivered by two goals from Pascal Gross.

Back in May, Alexis Mac Allister struck a 98th minute penalty to secure a 1-0 victory for the Albion. And now this.

It is all a far cry from the 1990s, when every school in Sussex was packed full of United fans glory-hunting after Sir Alex Ferguson’s treble winners. At the same time, homeless Brighton fought off relegation to the Conference.

Danny Welbeck got the party started with a 20th minute opener in front of the Stretford End. Gross doubled the advantage with his traditional goal against United before substitute Joao Pedro made it 3-0 with 20 minutes still to play.

United did pull one back through Hannibal Mejbri but it was nothing more than a consolation. Boos from the Old Trafford crowd at Erik ten Hag substituting new £64 million striker Rasmus Hojlund turned to shocked silence by the end amongst those United fans who had not walked out early.

What made the result even more enjoyable was Ten Hag’s reaction to it. In a bizarre post match interview, the United boss tried to claim the Albion had “spent money” as a means to explain how his team had been beaten.

The combined cost of the entire Brighton starting XI who defeated United was under £17m. United had spent four times that on Hojlund alone, the latest addition to a squad built for £991 million.

Quite what Ten Hag had been smoking before making his money excuses, nobody knows. I would not mind trying some though. It must be seriously strong stuff.
