Maupay bursts the Irons’ bubbles: Photos from West Ham 1-1 Brighton
Rarely do you get better football photos than when a last minute goal occurs and needless to say, that means our West Ham 1-1 Brighton collection is a belter.
Nothing is certain in life except death, taxes and Brighton never losing to West Ham. This was the closest however that the Albion have come to suffering Premier League defeat at the hands of the ‘Appy ‘Ammers as the Seagulls trailed for 85 of the 89 minutes played.
Some woeful defending from a corner allowed Tomas Soucek to head home far too easily, with Robert Sanchez and Lewis Dunk the main culprits for the defensive mess.
It should have got worse for the Albion in the second half. Sanchez got in another state from another corner and after West Ham bundled the ball home, VAR took a look at an absolute non-foul on the Brighton goalkeeper.
As luck would have it, whilst the video assistant did not take long to rule that Sanchez had not been impeded, they did spot that Michail Antonio had strayed a millimetre offside and so the goal was chalked off.
The Albion made the most of the reprieve, equalising in the 89th minute when Tariq Lamptey crossed and Neal Maupay produced a simply stunning overhead kick to catch the entire London Stadium by surprise.
That ensured that Brighton remain undefeated in this corner of Stratford, a run now stretching back five matches to when Chris Hughton delivered a 3-0 victory on the Seagulls’ first visit in October 2017.
It is little wonder that we enjoy our trips to the East End so much. Except for the beer prices. £6.20 for a pint of flat Amstel almost makes £3.20 for a bag of Starbust at the Amex look reasonable.
Fingers crossed Paul Barber does not see the photo of the food and drink pricing and get any ideas…
