Miserable weather, miserable football: Photos from Brighton 0-3 Burnley
The rain poured. The wind blew. The trains were a mess. And the goals flew into the Albion net, making our photos from Brighton 0-3 Burnley one of the most miserable collections of the 2021-22 season so far.
Where do you even start with what went wrong? Well, how about with Graham Potter’s starting XI. Playing a back four stifled the attacking output of Tariq Lamptey and Marc Cucurella whilst the decision to use Jakub Moder and Alexis Mac Allister as wingers ensured that two of Brighton’s most in-form players were anonymous.
The Albion were carved apart by one-touch passing for Burnley’s opener, finished off by Wout Weghorst for his first Premier League goal.
Robert Sanchez and Shane Duffy then got into an argument over who was right to go for a high ball into the box. Minutes later and Duffy was skinned by Josh Brownhill and Sanchez let a relatively weak shot deflected off Joel Veltman creep into the back of the net as Burnley went into half time 2-0 ahead.
Potter belatedly changed things 10 minutes into the second half. Solly March made a slight difference out on the left but not enough to fashion a meaningful chance for Brighton.
Burnley wrapped things up through Aaron Lennon scoring via the bar with 20 minutes still to play. At that point, the Amex began to empty as Albion fans decided that attempting the trek home via cancelled trains and rail replacement buses was a better option than seeing if the Clarets could heap on more misery.
Thankfully, they couldn’t. That means that Brighton 0-5 Plucky Little Bournemouth from April 2019 remains the worst result of the Amex Era, although this was not far behind.
