Throwback ground, throwback Albion: Luton 4-0 Brighton photos

Kenilworth Road is a throwback of a football ground and in the same way these photos look like they have come straight from a time long ago, Brighton gave a throwback performance to when they used to be crap in losing 4-0 to Luton Town.

This was the worst performance of the Roberto De Zerbi Era so far as the Albion were outthought and outfought by a side who started the day 18th in the Premier League table.

Seagulls supporters were still coming through the away end turnstiles infamously located in the front room of a house by the time Brighton were 2-0 down with only three minutes on the clock.

The Albion made four or five passes from kick off, lost the ball and allowed Luton to take the lead via Elijah Adebayo with 18 seconds played.

Two minutes later and the Hatters doubled their advantage. Jason Steele came charging 30 yards from his goal despite having little hope of beating the speedy Chiedozie Ogbene to a through ball. Ogbene duly rounded the now-stranded Brighton goalkeeper and rolled into the empty net.

The Hatters added a third before half time when Ross Barkley found an all-too familiar gap between Igor Julio and Pervis Estupinan to thread a pass into. Adebayo applied the finish.

Adebayo then completed his hat-trick in the second half when heading home unmarked at the back post after Joao Pedro inadvertently flicked on a Luton corner.

Even the Albion’s hat-trick hero from the 5-2 win at Sheffield United 72 days earlier found himself contributing to the Luton cause.

Brighton did at least manage to survive the final 30 minutes without conceding a fifth. That was one of the only positives of a grim evening in Bedfordshire, although we really should not have been surprised.

The Albion had beaten Luton just three times in 31 visits to Kenilworth Road and only once since 1934. It is one those venues at which Brighton turn to shit… even this squad of some of the finest players ever to play for the Seagulls.
