First sun of Spring can’t bring an Amex win: Brighton 0-2 Aston Villa photos

Your photos from Brighton 0-2 Aston Villa captured the first sun of Spring on a glorious February afternoon at the Amex Stadium. This beautiful weather was in stark contrast to the football.

For the second week running, the Albion hosted a side below them in the Premier League table. And for the second week running, they mustered only one shot on target on their way to a defeat in which they failed to score.

This loss was not quite as bad as the previous week’s Brighton 0-3 Burnley scoreline. Villa are a decent side after all whereas the Clarets had rocked up in Sussex having won only once all season.

But there was still a very clear sense of frustration amongst the 10,000 or so of the “record Amex crowd of 31,475” who remained until the end. Where has the enjoyment gone in watching the Albion at home?

Kick off had to be delayed by 30 minutes after the Villa team coach became stuck in traffic caused by a crash on the A23. Perhaps as a result, Brighton actually started the better side without ever really testing Emiliano Martinez.

Matty Cash gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half. The Poland international was allowed far too much time and space on the edge of the box to hit a clinical volley low and hard into the bottom corner of Robert Sanchez’s goal.

Alexis Mac Allister might have done better with a rising shot that kissed the crossbar before the interval. Sanchez then pulled off an outrageous save from a Phillipe Coutinho free kick early in the second half.

It was game over just past the hour mark when Tyrone Mings hit a long ball out of defence which Joel Veltman completely misjudged.

Ollie Watkins took full advantage, scoring for the first time in seven matches to make it Brighton 0-2 Villa and pile more Amex agony on Albion fans.

The good news is Brighton hit the road to Newcastle United next week. Away games are much more fun at the minute, and they do no come much better than a trip to the Toon.
