Great trip, decent performance, crap result: Newcastle 2-1 Brighton photos

Judging by the photos and comments sent in by Albion fans who made the long journey north for Newcastle 2-1 Brighton, it was an enjoyable trip to St James’ Park in every aspect bar the result.

This of course should not come as a surprise. Newcastle is an incredible city, a majority of Seagulls supporters seemed to take advantage by making a weekend of it and many cheap pints of Brown Ale and other assorted refreshments were sunk in the pubs and clubs of Tyneside.

“Haven’t a clue what this was but I know I was 10 pints down at the time so must have been good,” was one of the better captions accompanying a tweeted photo.

Look past the blurriness and it appeared to be an empty dancefloor (or perhaps a factory) with a purple glow. You can decide for yourself – it made the cut despite being one of several photos submitted that had nothing remotely to do with Newcastle 2-1 Brighton.

We should probably discuss what happened in the football. Brighton started well enough and Shane Duffy should have opened the scoring inside the opening 10 minutes when putting a free header from a pinpoint Pascal Gross corner wide.

A disastrous 120 second spell then saw the Toon Army score twice. Ryan Fraser finished off a lightning quick counter led by Jacob Murphy whose shot hit the post before rebounding kindly to the goal scorer.

Fraser turned provider next, swinging over a set piece which Fabian Scharr met with a free header past Robert Sanchez. From 0-0 down and being on top to 2-0 behind more quickly than you can say “Fog on the Tyne is all mine all mine.”

The Albion were the better side for the next 75 minutes but the damage had been done. Lewis Dunk pulled one back early in the second half and despite having plenty of the ball and creating a fair few opportunities, Brighton were unable to equalise.

A crap result, a decent performance and a great away trip. It is so often the Albion way.
