Drab night at the Gtech: Brentford 0-0 Brighton photos
The traditional photos of Tony Bloom in the Brighton away end at Brentford provided arguably the only highlight of an otherwise dull 0-0 draw between Bees and Seagulls in West London.
Bloom once again shunned the hospitality of his despised rival and Brentford owner Matthew Benham, opting to sit with Albion supporters rather than in the director’s box at the Gtech Stadium.
Makes you wonder if he was as bored as the rest of us? Or if he had a half time pint of London Pride on the concourse, the availability of which went down well with at least one Brighton fan?
Unfortunately, you needed at least 10 pints of Pride to make this game seem even mildly entertaining. Something not many Albion supporters could entertain on a school night.
The stats will tell you the Albion racked up 24 shots and had 67 percent possession. Which just goes to prove how meaningless stats can be.
None of those shots asked a serious question of Bees goalkeeper Mark Flekken and most of the possession was sideways pass followed by sideways pass, reminiscent of the Glow Up Graham Potter Era.
Brighton might have had a penalty when Lewis Dunk and Yoane Wissa tangled in the box from a first half corner. Referee Andrew Madley was sent to the screen by VAR but on watching back, concluded Dunk had fouled Wissa first and so stuck with his original decision not to award the Albion a spot kick.
This was probably the correct call and a rare example of VAR actually doing its job – a far cry from the utter shambles of Spurs 2-1 Brighton last season at a time when every trip to the capital seemed to involve an officiating farce.
Instead, failure to win this time was down to slow approach play and poor finishing. The Albion will need to do better if the next eight games are to deliver European qualification again.
