No Easter Sunday miracle at Anfield: Liverpool 2-1 Brighton photos

The Albion spent Easter Sunday at Anfield but unlike Jesus rising from the dead, there is no miracle contained within these photos as Brighton went down 2-1 to Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Not that this result was anything to be ashamed of. Injury problems continue to ravage Roberto De Zerbi’s squad and despite not having played a competitive game for over two weeks, even more players were ruled out of the trip to Merseyside.

Billy Gilmour and Julio Enciso joined the lengthy absentee list and with Joao Pedro still not fit after eight weeks out, there appeared little prospect of the Seagulls causing an upset against Jurgen Klopp’s title chasers.

And yet, Brighton gave the Redmen plenty to think about – starting as early as 85 seconds in, when Danny Welbeck volleyed the visitors into a shock lead.

Luis Diaz equalised on the half hour mark before Mo Salah popped up with his normal goal against the Albion to put Liverpool 2-1 ahead midway through the second half.

Anfield though remained nervy, perhaps remembering how Brighton had found late equalisers on their previous two visits – a 2-2 draw in October 2022 and last year’s 3-3 thriller as Roberto De Zerbi took charge of the Albion for the first time.

Brighton had chances to secure a comeback draw late on. Lewis Dunk saw a header kept out by Caoimhin Kelleher, Adam Lallana dragged a good chance wastefully wide and Welbeck fired into the side netting.

That Lallana opportunity raised a few eyebrows amongst Manchester City and Arsenal fans, coming just a few hours after the ex-Liverpool midfielder said he was desperate for his former club to win the title this season.

Because Lallana would deliberately miss to avoid taking points off the Redmen, wouldn’t he?!
