The Albion score not one goal, but two: Photos from Arsenal 1-2 Brighton

Goals and wins have been in short supply for Albion fans since mid-February. Through a haze of blue smoke, these photos from Arsenal 1-2 Brighton prove that it was not a dream and that the Seagulls really did end their drought in style at the Emirates Stadium.

It turned out to be one of the best away days of the season so far. A 3,000 strong away end, a confident Brighton display rounded off by two stunning strikes from outside the area, the sun shining over London and the beers flowing before and after.

Three points were not the only reasons for the exuberant celebrations seen in the Albion corner of the stadium, where the party atmosphere was a far cry from recent weeks at the Amex.

Victory all-but guarantees Premier League football for a sixth successive season in 2022-23. The focus is now on eclipsing the club’s best ever top flight haul of 41 points and highest position of 13th.

There was also a tantalising glimpse into the future of the Albion’s central midfield. Enock Mwepu and Moises Caicedo started a Premier League game together for their first time in a dynamic, creative and forward-thinking partnership.

Mwepu set up the opening goal for Leandro Trossard midway through the first half. The Computer himself then scored the second with a clinical volley after Caicedo picked out his run towards the edge of the box with a dinked cross from the by-line.

If Mwepu can stay fit next season and Caicedo performs as he did at the Emirates on a frequent basis, the inevitable summer departure of Yves Bissouma suddenly seems much less of a problem for the Albion.

Brighton did need some luck to see out victory. Arsenal hit the bar twice and had a goal controversially ruled out for offside against Gabriel Martinelli.

The Gunners were also denied by a couple of excellent Robert Sanchez saves late on. The only way Arsenal could get past Sanchez was when Martin Odegaard hit a distance drive which deflected in off Danny Welbeck.

No doubt Gunners fans will be glad to see the back of Brighton. This was the Albion’s second win from five visits to the Emirates, the other coming in December 2019 when it finished Arsenal 1-2 Brighton again.
