Despair and disappointment: Brighton 0-4 Man City photos

Brighton 0-4 Man City was a night featuring photos of despair at the referee, disappointment at the Albion and a fan buying 94 bags of salt and vinegar crisps.

Spare a thought for that poor individual. You might have endured a bad evening watching the Seagulls thrashed by the champions, but at least it didn’t set you back an additional £178.60 on Walkers.

Brighton were their own worst enemy at times as they gave away some cheap goals whilst trying to outplay and out pass the Citizens at their own game.

Whilst the Albion did manage to do that when holding City to a 1-1 draw at the Amex last season, Pep Guardiola’s side had already wrapped up the title by that point and were in rest mood ahead of the FA Cup and Champions League final.

Brighton faced a very different beast on this occasion, up against a City outfit needing points to secure their fourth consecutive championship ahead of Arsenal.

Combine that with some terrible decisions from the officials and the Albion were on a hiding to nothing, sadly.

Kevin De Bruyne headed the visitors into the lead with a little over 15 minutes on the clock. When Phil Foden then slipped on the wet surface, referee Jarred Gillett remarkably awarded City a free kick.

To make matters worse, Foden went onto score said free kick thanks to some appalling defending from the Brighton wall. Pascal Gross turned his back, leading to a heavy deflection off Der Kaiser which defied Jason Steele.

City added their third when Valentin Barco gave away the ball inside the Albion box as Brighton attempted to play put from the back. Foden duly punished the error with his second of the evening.

The Seagulls did at least stem to the flow in the second half, conceding only once more to Julian Alvarez. Brighton probably should have had at least two penalties but in a total shock to all watching, big six bias played out from Mr Gillett.
