Five star Albion set top flight record: Brighton 5-2 Leicester photos

High-fives all round. This selection of glorious photos captures the sunny Sunday afternoon when Brighton beat Leicester City 5-2, scoring five goals in a top flight game for the first time ever.

The Albion have racked up a few fours in their time, most recently (and famously) against Manchester United at the Amex back in May.

Going back a little further, Chris Hughton oversaw a 4-1 victory over Swansea City in the 2017-18 campaign. A collector’s item goal from DJ Jurgen Locadia was included in that particular rout.

Never a five though. Not until now, anyway. It is just the latest in a long line of Brighton records rewritten by Graham Potter, including last season’s ninth place finish and first away victories at the likes of Manchester United, Everton, Aston Villa and, er, Preston North End.

This was 90 minutes of ridiculous drama and entertainment at the Amex. Kelechi Iheanacho put Leicester ahead with only 56 seconds played.

Solly March forced an own goal from Foxes defender Luke Thomas on eight minutes. Moises Caicedo gave the Albion the lead on 15. Leicester equalised through Patson Daka on 33.

Half time arrived with the scores locked at 2-2. At that point, it felt like a 12-12 draw was on the cards. Brighton sorted themselves out defensively at the break and were even more magnificent going forward, scoring three unanswered goals to run away with the game.

Alexis Mac Allister claimed two, one from the penalty spot and the other with a spectacular 25 yard free kick bent into the stanchion of the Leicester.

Mac Allister would have had a hat-trick had VAR not stuck its beak in, spotting Enock Mwepu a millimetre offside just before the Albion number 10 hit a stonking volley from distance into the same corner of the goal his later free kick would hit.

Leandro Trossard was the other Brighton scorer between those two legal Mac Allister efforts. Victory left Brighton fourth with six games of the 2022-23 Premier League season played, giving reason to be optimistic that Potter and his players will break even more records before the end of the campaign.
