Irons make it lucky 13: Brighton 1-3 West Ham photos

After 12 winless games against the Albion, these photos capture the afternoon that Brighton 1-3 West Ham made it lucky number 13 for the Irons.

Not since Brighton had won promotion to the Premier League in 2017 had the Hammers tasted victory in this fixture. In fact, you had to go back to when West Ham beat the Albion 6-0 at Upton Park in the Championship for the last time the Irons took three points off Brighton.

David Moyes and co had Adam Webster to thank for his huge role in ending their Brighton drought. The Albion centre back had one of those games, directly responsible for the first Hammers goal followed by playing a questionable part in the other two.

A combination of a terrible Webster back pass and his easily outmuscling by Michail Antonio left the Jamaican international free to square to the unmarked James Ward-Prowse to open the scoring.

For the second goal, Webster was caught out of position as Antonio found Said Benrahma. He crossed to Jarrod Bowen at the back post, who produced a lovely first touch followed by a deft finish with the outside of the boot past debutant Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Antonio himself wrapped things up with West Ham’s third just past the hour mark. Bowen turned provider, delivering a ball into the box which found the unmarked Antonio.

Webster was supposed to be picking Antonio up. And when Webster did eventually get close, he found himself turned inside out as Antonio created some space and drilled a shot across Verbruggen and into the bottom corner.

Pascal Gross pulled one back for the Albion with 10 minutes remaining. Although nothing more than a consolation, it moved Gross ahead of Glenn Murray and Neal Maupay as the highest scoring Brighton player in the Premier League. One small positive on an otherwise disappointing day.
