Look out for Tuchel throwing his toys: Photos from Chelsea 1-1 Brighton

Thomas Tuchel is lucky that most supporters had left Stamford Bridge by the time he was giving his Chelsea 1-1 Brighton post-match interview as otherwise, our fan photos might well have captured the Blues boss throwing all those toys from his pram.

Tuchel blamed the referee, VAR, injuries, Covid-19, the Loch Ness Monster and the Curse of Tutankhamun for his European Champions failing to beat the Albion. No acknowledgement that Chelsea had been outplayed and were actually lucky to come away with a point.

Because that was the reality of what the footballing world saw at Stamford Bridge. After Romelu Lukaku put the Blues 1-0 ahead midway through the first half, Chelsea did not manage another shot until the final 10 minutes of the match.

Brighton were dominant enough to ensure that the Champions League holders did not register an effort on Robert Sanchez’s goal for over an hour.

Despite the Albion being the better team by some distance, it looked like Chelsea were about to commit the biggest heist seen in London since the Hatton Garden robbery by claiming a thoroughly underserved victory as they led 1-0 until the 91st minute.

And then Danny Welbeck decided to strike. Over came a cross from Marc Cucurella, which Dat Guy Welbz rose to meet with a powerful header placed perfectly out of reach of Chelsea’s outstanding goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Cue mental scenes in the away end and another flare thrown onto the pitch in celebration as the Albion struck at the death to secure a point for the third away game running.

Neal Maupay had burst West Ham’s bubbles and stopped Southampton marching. This time, it was Welbeck’s turn to leave Chelsea feeling blue and Tuchel having a post-Christmas feast of sour grapes.
